At the American Heart Association, your contribution matters, and so does your career.The American Heart Association has a phenomenal opportunity for an Associate Regulatory Affairs Manager with our Federal Advocacy Team in our Washington, DC office (hybrid work arrangements available).Under the direction of the Director, Federal Regulatory Affairs, you would be responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and drafting responses to a defined set of federal regulatory issues and representing the American Heart Association before federal agencies. The primary focus of your regulatory work would be the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Core topics would include nutrition, food labeling, and prevention, with the opportunity to assist on other topics as needed. In addition to drafting comment letters, you would work with other advocacy, grassroots, and communications staff to help develop strategies to advance the association's regulatory priorities in these areas. As part of your work, you would serve on internal committees, external workgroups and coalitions, and participate in meetings with federal agency officials and staff. Other duties may include helping prepare senior staff and volunteers for meetings with Administration officials or public meetings, including preparing oral statements and presentations.The Association offers many resources to help you maintain work-life harmonization through your changing needs and life situations.   • Monitor regulatory issues in defined areas daily and identify opportunities to advance the American Heart Association's priorities.
  • Review proposed and final rules and prepare summaries for distribution to staff and volunteers.
  • Work with appropriate staff, volunteers, and partners to prepare regulatory comments and correspondence to federal agencies.
  • Participate in meetings with federal agency staff.
  • Help brief high-level staff and volunteers in preparation for federal agency hearings and meetings, including helping draft written and oral statements and other presentations.
  • Support the development, planning, and execution of issue advocacy campaigns to advance key regulatory priorities.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with federal agency staff and coalition partners.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with staff in other departments, while monitoring and reporting on issues related to their work.
  • Attend advisory committee meetings, federal agency meetings, coalition meetings, press conferences, issue briefings, hearings, etc.
  • Provide content for Federal Advocacy communications as needed.Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in and knowledge of regulatory affairs, government relations, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, including critical thinking.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, and learn new skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Health, Nutrition, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years prior experience writing regulatory comment letters and interacting with policymakers.
  • Knowledge of federal executive branch procedures and policies.
  • Experience working within a federal agency such as HHS, FDA, CDC, or USDA desirable.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory issues, including nutrition issues.Compensation - Expected pay range will be $65,000 - $72,000. Pay is commensurate with experience; geographic differentials to the pay range may apply.
